American War on Syria – Really?

When Mr.Bush left the Presidential office, the US economy was in shambles and debt almost 100% of the GDP. Obama took over and was often taunted as Mr.Good but for nothing as he really hasn’t done much. But, low and behold, that has worked for the best and the proof is in the pudding - the US economy has bounced back.

Actually if the US keeps out of wars around the world, that is enough for its economy to do well. The key reason is that the economy is mature, sound and competitive and does not depend much upon the state. If the government does no harm, the economy can take care of itself.

Not interfering in or invading or attacking a myriad nations is at the heart of the American revival story. At a time when most developing economies are facing pressures of one kind or the other like the Chinese stock market crash or the Indian Rupee depreciation, investors are turning back to the US economy once again. While Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner have done smart financial management too, the economy has really bounced back on its own strength. It is the one and only true market economy and that keeps it competitive and still leads the world in innovations.

However now, Mr. Obama is considering attacking Syria and the same set of bally allies –the UK and France are backing him up. Have they forgotten Iraq? It will be another mess like that. Overthrowing dictators is easy but dealing with power struggles and chaos thereafter is not. It was easy to start wars in Afghanistan, Iraq etc. but oh so difficult and “costly” to get out of them. Or have they forgotten? Or may be it is just “an itch” – like an American president doesn’t feel like a president unless he has attacked a country or two.

After the ‘Bull in a China shop’ Bush term, really Mr.Obama’s do-nothing-ism has yielded great returns to America. He should not give up that strength.

Yes countries like Syria have to resolve their civil wars but maybe they have to do it on their own. While sanctions, media pressure etc. are good tools, direct Western military intervention will only create a bigger mess. I do not remember when last Western intervention in the Middle East has yielded any positive results. So, why will Syria be any different?
